Ways To Make Your Home Healthier

Your home should be a sanctuary for your family, and that means that it should be as healthy as you can possibly make it. There may be hidden hazards, or at least some tricky issues, that can make your home unhealthy or less healthy than it should be. So check out a few of the following ideas to make your home a healthier place to live.

Your Water

First, consider your water. Have you ever had it tested? If not or if it has been a while, you might want to call in a professional who can run a test on your water to see if it contains any chemicals or minerals. If the results aren’t quite what you’d like, consider investing in a new water softener, filtration system or both. Your family will appreciate clean, pure, good-tasting water, and you’ll enjoy the peace of mind.

Your Air

What about your air quality? Is the air in your home fresh and clear, or are you plagued by dust, mold, pollutants and allergens? You can purchase an indoor air quality monitor to help you test your home’s air or bring in a professional for a more thorough reading and some good advice. You may need to install an air purifier if the tests reveal some issues. Sometimes cleaning your heating and air conditioning systems can help, too. Remember, though, this is not really a job for an amateur. Hire a company that can perform the task thoroughly and safely.

Your Surfaces

Do some research online for other warning signs, and take action right away if you must.

Your Yard

There could be potential health hazards in your yard, too. Give your yard a thorough inspection. You might notice everything from bugs and snakes (call in an exterminator to get rid of them) to scattered trash (put on a thick pair of gloves, and clean it up). Check your trees for broken limbs that might fall, and make sure that toys and tools are stored away so that no one trips over them. If you use fertilizer on your lawn or garden, try to keep it to a minimum to avoid overexposure to unhealthy chemicals. If you have a pool or hot tub, make sure to take proper safety measures.

Your Security

Finally, give your home a thorough security overhaul. Inspect doors and windows. They should close and lock securely. Your locks should be at least deadbolts on outside doors, and you may need to update window locks as well. Check your external lights, and install timers and motion sensors as needed. You may want to research a home security system if you don’t already have one, and be sure to create an emergency plan for your family so that everyone knows exactly what to do if the worst should happen.

You want your home to be as safe and comfortable as possible, so give your home’s health the attention it deserves. It could save you a lot of trouble in the long run.
