In Tell Me Lies, Van Patten plays Lucy, an interesting young woman who gets into an unplanned relationship with Stephen (Jackson White). This relationship unravels over the course of the show, which takes place over eight years. Tell Me Lies is a great binge-watching movie in the same style as You and Sex/Life.

Then there’s the brilliant idea of a group of actors who change roles each season, moving into different time periods and subgenres. Amazing actors like Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, and Kathy Bates keep coming back to Murphy’s crazy worlds because they get to play such weird, out-of-the-box roles, and it’s clear that they’re having a great time doing it. But perhaps the best thing that American Horror Story has done is bring Jessica Lange back to the spotlight.
Hannibal (2013-2015)
Even in the work of a visionary like Bryan Fuller, there has never been anything like Hannibal. The show fills out the skeleton of Thomas Harris’s series of books about Hannibal the Cannibal. To call it cinematic would be a bit of an insult. Fuller makes the relationship between the title character, a psychiatrist who is also a serial killer (played by Mads Mikkelsen), and Will Graham, an FBI profiler who is following him without knowing it (played by Hugh Dancy), the heart of the series. Their fights bring up surprising ideas about masculinity, animality, sexuality, and the act of killing.
The writing is always great and full of tasty references to art, cooking, literature, and music, but what draws people to this short-lived, one-of-a-kind show is how it uses images, editing, and music. The series is a sensory overload, with a simple but sophisticated score that sounds like scraping flesh and drops of blood expanding in and reverberating off a pool of liquid, and images that fade and cut into a glorious barrage of horror and heat. And that’s not even talking about the great supporting cast, led by Laurence Fishburne, Gillian Anderson, Caroline Dhavernas, and Scott Thompson, who all gave the best performances of their careers.
Only Murders in the Building (2021-present)
The older generation loves Steve Martin and Martin Short, but the younger generation grew up with Selena Gomez as she went from a Disney Channel starlet to a worldwide star. Everyone, of any age, seems to be crazy about true crimes. Only Murders In The Building knows this and brings them all together in a series that is effortlessly charming, often fascinating, and always funny. It follows three residents of a wealthy New York apartment building as they use the murder of one of the residents as the basis for their own True-Crime series. Everyone, no matter what age, can enjoy this show.
The Mindy Project (2012-2017)
Mindy Kaling released The Mindy Project after her success as an actress and writer on The Office. Mindy Lahiri, who Mindy Kaling plays, is a successful doctor whose life is a bit chaotic. She talks about dating, making decisions, and becoming the woman she wants to be in a funny and clever way. It’s a great view for people who are also not sure what to do. Plus, Kaling is, as expected, very smart. Watch all six seasons at once on Hulu.
Nathan for You (2013-2017)
Nathan For You is a show with a very specific sense of humor. It mixes cringe comedy with the strange things that happen to us every day. In the series, Nathan Fielder, who got really good grades in business school, travels around the US to help struggling businesses in his own unique way. From making a fake movie to help a Hollywood gift shop get more customers to making a fake viral video of a pig saving a baby goat for a petting zoo to the infamous Dumb Starbucks fiasco, Nathan For You is one of the funniest shows ever to air, and this writer isn’t just saying that because he has the same name as the show’s main character.
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia (2005-present)
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a great choice for someone who wants to watch a feel-good comedy for a long time. There are 15 seasons of the show on Hulu. The comedy show is about five crazy friends who work at an Irish pub in Philadelphia, which is not a big surprise. This is the show for you if you want one with Danny DeVito that doesn’t take itself too seriously.
