Moving to Sydney? Here Are Some Things You Need to Know

A lot of people are moving to Sydney, Australia these days. It is a beautiful city with lots of work entertainment opportunities. However, if you’re not careful, there can be some downsides as well—as with any other city in the world.

Here are 10 things that you should know (or be reminded of) before moving to the big Aussie city:

  1. Search for apartment units for rent Sydney based on location and amenities before anything else. These are important aspects to consider when you’re not familiar with an area yet.
  2. Learn about the public transportation system and figure out which pass will be best for you if you’re going to work or school.
  3. Hiring a moving company will make the process easier, but it may be more expensive than doing everything yourself.
  4. Be prepared for a change in climate. Sydney is known for its hot, humid summers and mild winters. According to locals, it is one of the hottest cities in Australia, and just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you won’t be sweating.
  5. Make sure you have health insurance and are up to date on all of your vaccinations before coming down under. The medical care in Australia is top-notch but it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
  6. Bring plenty of Australian currency (AUS dollars) with you when you arrive, as it may be difficult to find ATMs that accept foreign cards at first. You’ll want to get cash out at an ATM when you first arrive for everything from groceries, gas stations, restaurants and coffee shops.
  7. Renting a car is probably not the best idea if you’re new to the area, but you will need one if you want to live outside of Sydney.
  8. Be prepared for culture shock! What may seem normal in your home country or city might be considered bizarre or offensive here.
  9. The cost of living in Sydney is high, so be prepared to pay more for rent, groceries and other expenses.
  10. Despite the high cost of living, the job market is booming in Sydney. That means finding work should not be too difficult.
  11.  Sydneysiders are known for being busy people but are certainly a lot of fun. Be patient when trying to make friends and learn about Australian culture before making any assumptions. That being said, people from Sydney can be really friendly!
  12. With plenty of things to do both during the day and at night, there’s really never a dull moment in Sydney. You’ll never run out of activities to keep you entertained, from beaches to museums!
  13. If you’re used to a more suburban lifestyle, Sydney may be quite the adjustment. The city is densely populated and there’s always something going on.
  14. One of the best things about Sydney is that it’s close to some of the most beautiful beaches in the world. If you need a break from the hustle and bustle of the city, take a day trip down to one of these amazing locations.
  15. Finally, be prepared for the Aussie accent, which can be quite difficult to understand at first! Remember that it’s okay to talk slowly and have an Australian speaker repeat what they just said. Australians in general are patient, especially to foreigners who are new to the country.

Sydney is known as one of the most beautiful cities in Australia. With its beaches and diverse culture, there’s always something new to explore. However, before making the move down under, make sure you are aware of some of the things that come with living in such a big city.

Moving to a new place—whether you’re from another city or country—can be both an exciting and challenging experience. But with proper preparation, you’ll be able to navigate your way like a pro!
