How is Singapore’s Education System Successful?


During our research, we discovered that Singapore boasts of the highest-achieving international students in maths and science. Back in 2015, Singapore was ranked as the best system of education across the globe by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development which is popularly referred to as OECD. 

One may wonder what and how Singapore has managed to achieve this success. Stay with us as we’ll highlight some features that contribute to the success of the system incorporated into the educational system in Singapore

1. Several Pathways made available for Learning Differently. 

The system of education here in Singapore is designed to provide students with several learning pathways and preferences, with different learning profiles. 

A total of 10 to 11 years of education is provided to each child, starting with 6 years of elementary school before progressing with 4 to 5 years of secondary school. Afterward, each child can choose from the two vocational pathways provided by either Polytechnics and junior colleges. 

Note that these available pathways will both lead you to university education upon graduation. Statistics show the percentage of students entering the university, Polytechniques, and Technical colleges as 30%, 48%, and 22% respectively. 

The educational system here believes that each student has his or her strengths, thus incorporating different pathways into their system. As a result, every student learns and progresses at his or her own pace, thereby providing adequate time and resources for every student to be employable and self-supporting in the nearest future. 

2. Responsive to Landscape Changes System 

The educational system in Singapore is responsive to landscape changes in an attempt to enable students to be contributors to the development of the economy of the nation. As a result, the educational system has undergone 4 different iterations in an attempt to reform positive changes in the whole system. 

These reforms are carefully communicated and the outcomes are closely monitored to ensure that the system created meets the desired goals for its reformation. 

3. Clear Goals of Education

One of the factors that differentiate the educational system in Singapore from others is the clear goals set for the desired outcomes of education. Such attitude aids in creating a curriculum that covers various theoretical concepts and also motivates teachers to prepare and develop professionally to fit into the nation’s adopted curriculum. 

Also, this set of goals helps to prevent disconnection between the conceptualized policies and how they are incorporated into the educational system here in Singapore. 

The goal of the best international schools in Singapore, as well as locals, is to ensure that these incorporated programs and educational activities are in line with the educational goals of the nation. 

However, these clear goals can seem impossible if school leaders and teachers are not clear and fully informed in self-development. 

4. Parental Engagement 

A notable goal set by the Ministry of Education in Singapore is to engage parents as partners who help to reinforce the values taught in their child’s school through their emphasis. As a result, two major platforms ensure interaction takes place between schools and parents namely a Support Group and annual meetings. 

The Parents Support Group comprises volunteered parents in every school in Singapore and the annual meetings are usually done between parents and teachers to discuss the progress of their wards.

Singaporean schools have incorporated this into their system to transform the learning environment and also and empower teachers to be creative, innovative, and nurture their students in the best way possible.
